Officially recognised by the Ministry of Agriculture, the Oltrepò Pavese Consortium is the Protection Consortium responsible for the promotion, safeguarding and management of the seven denominations of Oltrepò Pavese: DOCG Oltrepò Pavese Metodo Classico, DOC Pinot Nero Oltrepò Pavese, DOC Oltrepò Pavese, DOC Oltrepò Pavese Pinot Grigio, DOC Buttafuoco, DOC Bonarda and DOC Sangue di Giuda.
The Consortium also has, among its statutory aims, the promotion of the wider Oltrepò wine region, and it also promotes and protects Pavia IGP wines.
Since 2025, the Consortium has adopted the collective Classese brand, which uniquely identifies the DOCG Metodo Classico Pinot Nero and is set to become the denomination’s new name.
2025 marks a major turning point, nearly fifty years after the Consortium’s foundation. In February, it adopted an innovative statute — unique in Italy today — that gives small producers fair representation, ensuring governance that protects the interests of all stakeholders.
For the first time in Italy, and to broad approval from public and private actors alike, the new statute also introduces a supply-chain bonus into the voting system, rewarding the commitment and work of those who carry out every stage of production, from vineyard to bottle: viticulture, winemaking and bottling.
Founded in 1977, the Consortium today includes around 155 directly associated wineries and hundreds of indirect members supplying the cooperative organisations. The relevant production comes from approximately 11,000 hectares of vineyards, the largest vineyard area in Lombardy, and amounts to roughly 25 million bottles per year.

Oltrepò Pavese stretches along the so-called wine parallel, the 45th parallel, and is shaped by four main valleys that run almost side by side as they climb toward the Apennine foothills: from east to west, the Versa Valley, Scuropasso Valley, Coppa Valley and Staffora Valley. The alternation of cultivated fields, woods and vineyards creates remarkable ecological diversity: Oltrepò wine is born in a highly biodiverse environment, where endemic species survive thanks in part to the presence of numerous protected natural areas.
